According to the MapQuest web site, National Airport (DCA) is about 10 minutes away by car. Opened on June 16, 1941, it was built by the federal government and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The airport's name was officially changed to "Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport" in February 1998 by the United States Congress. Terminal A, which is the original historic 1941 terminal, has an Exhibit Hall displaying artifacts from an archeological dig on the former Abingdon Plantation, on which the airport was built. The Hall also includes displays about the early aviation history of the airport. Serving as a "short-haul" airport, National offers nonstop service to destinations no further than 1,250 miles from Washington, D.C. As a result of congressional legislation passed in 1999, six round trip flights a day serve four cities beyond the perimeter. They are: Denver, Phoenix (2), Las Vegas (2) and Los Angeles. Twenty-three passenger airlines serve National. Daily nonstop service is offered to 64 U.S. cities and direct service to 3 Canadian cities. Major carriers
